The Path of Life – Stepping in the Light

“Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” Psalm 16:11

Life is full of decisions. Each decision points us in a direction, much like a path leads to a destination. Once we begin moving down a path toward its destination, every step we take carries us further from where we might have been headed if we had chosen a different path. Sometimes it seems like we cannot see the path before us, and we feel like there is no way to move forward. When we come to these moments, we need someone to help us find a path. At other times, we are faced with multiple options that seem relatively equal in merit and opportunity. The more intently we search for the potential positives and negatives associated with each possible path, the more confusing the choices seem. We then have a difficult time choosing the best course of action. Perhaps David had come to a crossroads in life as he penned this psalm. David identified exactly what we need in these situations when the way ahead seems unclear. He said that the Lord would show him the path of life. The only hope we have in times of uncertainty or confusion is for God to show us the path that we should choose.

Are you facing a difficult decision? God knows the situation that you are in. He knows each option that you have, and how each one will turn out. He loves you, and He wants what is best for you. You can trust Him to help you make the right decision.

If you were to find yourself walking down a path in the dark of night with only an old-fashioned lantern to light the way, you wouldn’t be able to see very far ahead. You would be able to see just enough of the pathway to know which direction to take your next step and enough of the ground to choose the best place for your feet. When it comes to our daily lives, God’s Word is a lot like that lantern. It will not show us the whole path at once, but it is exactly what we need to help us decide how to take the next step.

The Bible is our source of spiritual light, and if we consistently seek God’s direction as we read from its pages, we will always have enough light for our next step along the pathway of life. It is then that we are, in the words of an old gospel song, “stepping in the light.”

The goal of this devotional guide is to encourage you to spend time in the Word of God each day. Reading the passages listed at the bottom of the page will take you all the way through the Bible in one year. The devotional thought for each day is taken from a text within that day’s reading, so even that small daily portion of reading will take you on a journey through God’s Word. It is my prayer that this guide would help you to walk closer to the Lord and that you will find yourself taking each step in the light of His Word.
