“These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.” Proverbs 6:16-19
The word abomination refers to something that provokes disgust or hatred; something that is detestable. When God makes a list of seven abominations, He mentions a proud look first. Our carnal nature is inherently filled with pride. The Archangel Lucifer was cast out of heaven and became known as Satan because his heart was lifted up with pride. Pride causes us to do stupid things. Lucifer rebelled against God. It is one thing for a human being who has never seen God in person to rebel in his heart, but what Lucifer did was quite another. Lucifer was referred to in Ezekiel 28:14 as the “anointed cherub that covereth.” This seems to indicate that he was the angel who stood closest to the throne of God in heaven. Satan knew first-hand how great and powerful God is, but he chose to rebel against Him in spite of that knowledge. When we are filled with pride, we are following Satan’s example. Samuel told Saul in I Samuel 15:23 that “rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.” God always hates pride, even when it is in the heart of a Christian. James 4:6 tells us that, “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.”
