The Same Measure – Stepping in the Light

“Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.” Luke 6:38

There are two important biblical truths in this verse. The first is that if you give to others, then others will give to you. God doesn’t want us to live a tight-fisted, miserly existence. He wants us to share what He has given to us with those around us. As we learn to share with others, we are not only blessed with the joy of giving; but we also have the opportunity to enjoy the things that others will give to us.

The second truth is that the measuring cup you use when you give is the same one that others will use when they give to you. The larger the measuring cup, the larger the portion will be that is meted out. Have you ever wanted to fill a bowl of soup from a large pot and only had a small spoon to work with? This can be a frustrating task. A large ladle can fill a soup bowl with only one serving. We will enjoy life more if we trade our small teaspoon for a large ladle when it comes to giving.

These truths are both universal. That means that they apply to our giving to the Lord as well as to other people. God wants us to give to Him of our time, our talent, and our treasures. Which measuring cup do you want God to use when He gives to you? He is going to use the same one that you use. So, in essence, you choose God’s measuring cup when you choose yours.

If you were to find yourself walking down a path in the dark of night with only an old-fashioned lantern to light the way, you wouldn’t be able to see very far ahead. You would be able to see just enough of the pathway to know which direction to take your next step and enough of the ground to choose the best place for your feet. When it comes to our daily lives, God’s Word is a lot like that lantern. It will not show us the whole path at once, but it is exactly what we need to help us decide how to take the next step.

The Bible is our source of spiritual light, and if we consistently seek God’s direction as we read from its pages, we will always have enough light for our next step along the pathway of life. It is then that we are, in the words of an old gospel song, “stepping in the light.”

The goal of this devotional guide is to encourage you to spend time in the Word of God each day. Reading the passages listed at the bottom of the page will take you all the way through the Bible in one year. The devotional thought for each day is taken from a text within that day’s reading, so even that small daily portion of reading will take you on a journey through God’s Word. It is my prayer that this guide would help you to walk closer to the Lord and that you will find yourself taking each step in the light of His Word.
