A Royal Prayer Request

“Moreover I make a decree what ye shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king’s goods, even of the tribute beyond the river, forthwith expenses be given unto these men, that they be not hindered. And that which they have need of, both young bullocks, and rams, and lambs, for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail: That they may offer sacrifices of sweet savours unto the God of heaven, and pray for the life of the king, and of his sons.” Ezra 6:8-10

The rebuilding of the temple at Jerusalem met with considerable opposition, and there had been a season of time when the work ceased as a result. When the matter came before the king, he commanded that the work go forward and that all of the materials necessary for building and maintaining the temple be provided. He also required that all of the animals and provisions for the sacrifices be supplied as well. Then the king gave an unexpected reason for his request. He asked that these things be done so that sacrifices could be made to the God of heaven and that prayers would be offered for the king and his sons. Here we find an example of a world monarch who wanted to have people praying for him. Do you believe in prayer? Would you like to have people praying for you? When was the last time that you shared a prayer request with someone else? This king’s example should encourage us in the area of prayer.
